Scientific research on lumber drying has proven that alternating exposure of lumber to harsh and mild drying conditions (or stress and relief phases) for a certain time span will not only enhance lumber grade, but also reduce drying time and power consumption. During the relief phases, the fans will even be switched off temporarily while lumber drying continues due to the steam pressure differential between core and shell of lumber. „Stop the fans for better drying“.
The creep behavior of lumber increases significantly if lumber is exposed to changing climatic conditions and air speeds above the wood surface in comparison to a constant climate. The maximum strain of the lumber also increases to the same extent (elasticity limit of lumber transverse to the grain direction). The changing climate will therefore not only lead to faster drying, but also to better lumber grade.
Patented drying technology – less power consumption, equal performance
The energy-saving system HILDEBRAND HTT® is based on height-adjustable aluminum baffles which are moved by the computer control system according to constantly updated drying data. Certain parts of the lumber stacks are temporarily baffled off of the kiln´s air flow. In the baffled-off sections of the lumber packages, air speed is lowered close to 0 fpm while air-speed in the non-baffled sections is significantly increased. Even without a strong air flow, the lumber in the baffled-off sections continues to dry gently due to the vapor partial pressure gradient between the core and the surface of the lumber boards. This puts the lumber into a “relaxation phase” with reduced drying stress. The drying process nevertheless continues. The patented HILDEBRAND Turbo Technology HTT enables customers to save electrical energy without compromising on drying time. In the non-baffled sections of the packages, the air velocity may be temporarily increased to up to 1,400 fpm – without HTT, this would only be possible with extremely large fans and correspondingly high power consumption!
